Why I am NOT Pro-Life
I have been following the news about politics, and listening to what my co-workers have been saying about the presidential candidates. What I heard at work when McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate is "I like her, she's pro-life, believes in one man, one woman...".
I am not pro-life, and I am for gay marriage. Let me explain why.
Pro-Choice
I have worked with kids in foster care, and have, in fact, adopted one of them. I happen to know for a fact that there are quite a few children that are currently in foster care (due to abuse or neglect by one man and one woman, by the way) that need homes and are available for adoption. What I can't understand is how anyone can justify bringing another unwanted child into this world.
My wife and I had to go through intense scrutiny when we were adopting. But the biological parents were allowed to be irresponsible and have a child that they were ill equipped to take care of. They could drink while the Mom was pregnant, and once the child was born, neglect and abuse her. How nice. But we had to prove that we would be perfect parents. Why? Because one man and one woman didn't do such a good job with her.
But in the case of incest and/or rape, how do you allow the child to be born, just because they are a human being? They are already set up for failure in life.
Gay Rights
I believe that gays and lesbians should have the same rights as the rest of us. Being gay is not the path my life was meant to take, and it is definitely not something I would like to experience, especially in this homophobic country. My soul-mate, it turns out, is a woman. Notice that I said "soul-mate". It just so happens that souls come in two flavors: male and female.
If your soul-mate is female and so are you, or your soul-mate is male and so are you, how is that a bad thing? Who am I to say that is not okay, just because mine is the opposite sex? As for the one man/one woman crap, as I noted above, they are the ones abusing and neglecting the unwanted children being brought into this world. These kids would be much better off with two Moms or two Dads who love each other and can provide a loving home for the kids in foster care that need good adoptive homes.
So, in conclusion, I am very open minded and do not agree with the conservatives on these issues. This is based on my personal experience, and what I believe. What do you think? What has been your experience?

I so agree. The main deciding factor on who gets to adopt should be stability and a capacity to care for and raise the child, not the sexual orientation of the adoptive parents.
It's unfortunate that good people that just want to do the right thing and parent a child through adoption are given such a hard time.
Great post!
You just got Stumbled and Dugg! ;)
Cool. Thanks for the comment.
I agree with you as well. I'm pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. Let people do what they want! Ugh.
I'm also pro-choice and support gay rights, for pretty much the same reasons you listed.
As a Gay blogger I can say...you can keep the kids. I don't want them touching my things. Plus they'll destroy the one thing the gay community has going for it. The disposable income. We are quickly becoming the wealthiest group. Since we don't have families to support. Not to forget, kids smell funny.
I'm just kidding. I have a really hard time loving this country these days. A place where my soul-mate can't visit me in the hospital, if some dick in my family objects. If I die he has no legal claim to anything in my name. If I have a child with a seragent, my husband can't adopt. God forbid I should die...the state could take our child away from him.
It's just...damn, so hard to be a proud American when you are one of the lowest classes. Illegals have more rights.
The one thing I can say... It has gotten better over the past 30 yrs. What I've seen in just the past 5 makes me think it could change, soon. We will either be legally hunted like deer or recognized as the people we are.
I am also pro-choice and I believe everyone should be given the choice of what happens to their body. I don't think the government should be able to decide for us especially in extreme cases of rape and incest.
Too many children are brought into a sometimes unloving, uncaring atmosphere that definitely need nurturing and if that can be achieved by adoption whether they be gay or whatever then so be it.
I was in an orphanage for 4 years and know many horror stories from abused children and I know many that were in foster care and adopted and even though the adults were scrutinized as caretakers they still ended by being abusers in some cases just like the biolgical parent.
I think it's important for people to go out and experience the world, and see its harsh realities. It's all too easy to buy into the pro-life argument when one has not seen or experienced the other side, like you have with your foster case experience. Similar with and anti-gay stance: if the same set of cloistered folk would go out and interact with people other than their own clique I think the homophobia would be greatly reduced. I like to think we are all more alike than we are different, it's unfortunate that too many people like to focus on the differences.
Great post! Choice is what this country is built upon. I guess it still is . . . We can choose to stay and fight or move to New Zealand, which, btw, is looking good to me.
This election has become farcial. We had a shot at a biracial/male/female ticket and we blew it. Now, we have a man who is going to drop dead from the excitement of winning, who will be replaced by a cheerleader who had the audacity to wear fur to the convention. She is married to an oil exec, cannot wait to drill in the ANWR. She is pro-choice and wants creationism taught next to evolution. Her 17 year old daughter is pregnant because teaching abstinence (another thing she believes in), does not work.
We all see how well the male/female thing is working out on capital hill. Just stay out of the bathrooms! LOL
I was raped in my youth. Even then (30+ years ago), the doctors gave me a pill to start my menses. No one should have to carry a child they do not want. Later in life, I became pregnant and had to make the choice to keep the baby or not. I kept this precious gift and he is a fine young man today. But it was my choice. Anyone think they can take that choice away from anyone I know, will be facing down the only vegetarian NRA member--ME!
Sorry. I did not mean to go on and on...
@ *lynne*
As a gay man who has traveled all over the world. I don't think it would do much good to bring the folks from a close minded community in to the fold of a queer party/event. They would only hate us even more. That would only enforce the stereotypes in their minds.
Maybe a one on one. But please god don't take them to a pride parade. Even I feel uncomfortable by all...well you know.
